How to Value Your Jewelry for Scrap
Unlike standard investment bullion (which trades very close to the live spot price), scrap jewelry valuations require understanding dealer margins. When you sell old jewelry to a pawn shop, jeweler, or mail-in service, they are not buying the “design” or the “make.” They are buying raw material to melt down.
The 3 Rules of Selling Jewelry:
- 1. Stones Deduct Weight Our calculator determines the price of the metal only. If your ring has diamonds, cubic zirconia, or gems, the buyer will subtract the estimated weight of those stones from the total weight before calculating your payout.
- 2. Expect a 20% to 30% Haircut Refineries charge jewelers a fee to process old gold back into pure 24K bars. The buyer also has to make a profit. Getting 80% of the “True Melt Value” is considered a very fair deal. Offers below 60% should be avoided.
- 3. Hallmarks Matter Check the inside of your ring or the clasp of your necklace. A stamp of “585” means 14K (58.5% pure). A stamp of “750” means 18K (75.0% pure). Select the matching Karat in the calculator above.
